Celebrating the Life and Legacy of Guru Angad Dev Ji

On April 28 2025, Sikhs around the world observe the Prakash (birth) of Guru Angad Dev Ji, the Second Sikh Guru. His life and teachings laid crucial foundations for the young Sikh community, and today his legacy of service, humility, and spiritual devotion continues to inspire millions.

Early Life and Spiritual Calling

Born as Lehna in 1504 in the village of Matte-di-Sarai (in present-day Punjab, India), Guru Angad Dev Ji was known for his integrity, compassion, and eagerness to learn. As a young man, he trained in wrestling and martial arts, but his heart was drawn to spiritual inquiry. A chance meeting with Guru Nanak Dev Ji transformed his life—Lehna became a devoted disciple, absorbing the Guru’s teachings and helping spread the message of Ik Onkar (One Creator) and universal equality.

Appointment as Second Sikh Guru

In 1539, Guru Nanak Dev Ji formally passed the mantle of Guruship to Lehna, who became Guru Angad Dev Ji. This transfer was not based on bloodline or caste, but on merit, devotion, and the ability to serve. His appointment cemented a core Sikh principle: leadership through humility and selfless service, rather than privilege or birthright.

Guru Angad Dev Ji’s Lasting Contributions

  1. Standardization of Gurmukhi Script
  2. Recognizing the need for a unified script in which to record and share the Sikh message, Guru Angad Dev Ji refined and standardized Gurmukhi. This script became the primary vehicle for Gurbani (the Sikh scriptures), ensuring that hymns and poetry could be written, read, and recited consistently across generations.

  3. Promotion of Langar and Seva
  4. Building on his predecessor’s teachings, Guru Angad Dev Ji institutionalized the langar (community kitchen) and expanded the practice of seva (selfless service). By inviting people of all backgrounds to eat together, he reinforced the values of equality and hospitality, breaking down social barriers in 16th-century Punjab.

  5. Physical & Spiritual Education
  6. A former wrestler, Guru Angad Dev Ji emphasized the importance of physical fitness alongside spiritual discipline. He established akharas (training centers) where young Sikhs could learn martial arts, yoga, and meditation—promoting balanced development of mind, body, and spirit.
